Paramount Picks Up Action Comedy Pitch For Gary Sanchez Team

By Anita Busch, Mike Fleming Jr

EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures just picked up an untitled action comedy pitch from Lauryn Kahn with Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates director Jake Szymanski attached to helm and Gary Sanchez’s Adam McKay, Will Ferrell and Kevin Messick on to produce. The story is about two FBI agents who go deep undercover as a married couple on a reality show about rich Los Angeles housewives.

Kahn and Szymanski will share story credit on the pitch. Interestingly, the two met as new hires at Gary Sanchez/Funny or Die when those companies started as Kahn was McKay’s assistant and Szymanski was the first director on staff for Funny or Die.

Szymanski’s feature directorial debut on the comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates — which starred Zac Efron just opened earlier this month to $16.5M. Sanchez previously sold Kahn’s comedy specs He’s Fuckin Perfect to Fox 2000 and I’m in Love with the DJ to Sony.

Paramount and Gary Sanchez, of course, collaborated on such hits as the Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg Daddy’s Home which grabbed $240M in box office receipts worldwide and Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues ($174M) as well as Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters ($226M). In addition, McKay wrote and directed The Big Short for Paramount which was nominated for five Academy Awards including for film, director and he took home the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay with co-writer Charles Randolph.

Kahn is repped by WME. Szymanski is repped by UTA and Mosaic.
