HBO’s Digital Platforms Push ‘Game Of Thrones’, ‘Veep’ & Others To Series Highs


HBO said today that viewership on its digital platforms pushed four of its Emmy-nominated series to record audiences in the spring, led by Games of Thrones. The premium cabler said Season 6 of its signature drama was it biggest, averaging 25.1M viewers in combined airings plus DVR, HBO on Demand and HBO Go/HBO Now.

That’s nearly 5 million more than Season 5 in 2015. HBO said digital views made up nearly 40% of the audience for defending Emmy champ Thrones, which continued its streak as the network’s most-watched series ever.

On the comedy side, Season 5 of 2015 Emmy winner Veep drew a series-record average of 4.7M viewers across all platforms, including 25% from d-platforms, and Season 3 of Silicon Valley was that comedy’s biggest, averaging 6.7M viewers, 40% coming from digital plays.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver also hits digital-boosted a high in its third season, averaging 5.6M. It drew 22% of its audience from digital. Real Time with Bill Maher is having its most watched season since its 2003 debut, with 4.4M viewers; 10% is coming from digital.
