Emmy Smackdown: Deadline’s Pete Hammond & Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil Predict Drama Categories

Television Academy

After a long — and expensive — pre-nom season, the Emmy nominations are set to be announced Thursday morning. Today and tomorrow, Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil and I will continue our spitballing and predictions on which shows will make the cut. Today we predict how the drama series and acting races will pan out. The big question is whether HBO’s Game Of Thrones can conquer the field for a second year in a row or newcomers like USA’s Mr. Robot can crack the code. Another big question is whether Downton Abbey in its final season can take the Drama Series crown for the first time (it did win in its first year in the Miniseries category before it switched to the regular drama series competition).

I tend to predict conservatively as I know TV Academy members (of which Tom and I are two out of nearly 19,000) have tastes that are slow to change. Tom, on the other hand, likes to take a swing every now and then. Click above to see our slugfest.
