Olympics Trials Score Ratings Wins For NBC On Sunday

NBC won Sunday among broadcast networks in the demo, and in overall audience, with coverage of U.S. Olympics Trials in track and field, and in gymnastics. From 7-8:30 PM ET, track and field coverage clocked 4.9M viewers, and a 1.1/5 demo rating/share. That’s up 38% compared to previous week’s Olympics Trials coverage among 18-49 year olds, and 23% in total viewers. The network’s full primetime of coverage grew by 67% from its first half hour to its third in the demo and by 2.1M viewers in overall audience.

That said, the first hour of primetime went to NBC’s Olympics walk-up in the demo (1.0, 4.3M viewers), but CBS’ newsmagazine 60 Minutes (0.8, 7.1M) took total viewers.

At 8 PM, NBC’s sports coverage continued tops in the demo (1.7, 6.5M viewers), and ABC’s Celebrity Family Feud took over the total viewer race (1.5, 7.3M). In so doing, Celebrity Family Feud shot up week to week, by 16% in total viewers (7.3M vs. 6.3M) and 36% in the demo (1.5/6 vs. 1.1/6). CBS’s Big Brother (1.6, 5.7M) also chalked up week-to-week gains in the hour, climbing 19% week to week in total viewers and 14% in the demo.

At 9 PM, NBC’s first full hour of gymnastics trials for the night took off, to lead the pack in both metrics (2.5, 8.5M). Gymnastics ruled for the rest of the primetime night,  growing NBC’s Olympics Trials tally at 10 PM to 2.7 demo rating and 8.9M total viewers. Also at 10, ABC’s freshman Match Game was up week to week by 9% among adults 18-49 (1.2/5 vs. 1.1/5).
