DGA Taps Veteran NBC Director John LiBretto To Chair Negotiating Committee

The DGA continues to gear up for next year’s round of contract negotiations, naming award-winning NBC news and sports director John LiBretto as chairman of its network negotiating committee. The group will bargain with the networks for a new contract covering guild members employed primarily in staff and freelance positions in news and sports.

This will be the second time that LiBretto will have served in the position, having led the committee’s most recent round of negotiations in 2013. He will be joined by Brett Holey and Scott Berger, who will serve as co-chairs of the negotiating committee. The current contract expires on June 30, 2017.

“I’m pleased to announce that John will once again lead our network negotiations,” said DGA president Paris Barclay. “His decades of television news and sports experience – combined with his extensive involvement negotiating many prior agreements – will be a tremendous asset to the Guild when we renegotiate our network contracts.”

LiBretto, the guild’s 6th vice president, has been an NBC director for more than four decades. He began his career at the network in 1968, and after a tour of duty with the Air Force in Vietnam, returned to NBC as an associate director, working on news, sports and soap operas. He then became a director for NBC Sports, directing all the major team sports, and five Summer Olympics. In the mid-1980s, he became a director for NBC News, where he directed all of NBC’s news programs, including Today and Dateline. He has won five News and Sports Emmys in news and sports and a Peabody Award for his work at NBC News.

Holey, the senior director of NBC Nightly News, directs breaking news, primetime and political programming and oversees directors, production and projects for network news. He was previously the director of NBC Nightly News for 18 years. He was vice-chair of the 2014 network negotiation committee and serves on the DGA’s Eastern Directors Council.

Berger, an associate director on the CBS Evening News, is the DGA’s assistant secretary-treasurer, and has on every DGA network negotiating committee since the 1980s, including as vice-chair in the last two rounds of negotiations.

As previously reported, DGA secretary-treasurer Michael Apted and 3rd vice president Thomas Schlamme will chair the feature film and television negotiating committee.
