Judge Grants New Trial To ‘Serial’ Podcast Subject Adnan Syed

A Maryland judge has granted a new trial to Adnan Syed, whose murder case was publicized by the podcast Serial.

Syed was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for killingĀ of his former high school girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999 and burying her in a park. He has been behind bars for 16 years.

Baltimore Circuit Judge Martin Welch ruled Thursday that Syed’s attorney failed to cross-examine a cell-tower expert about the reliability of data that placed Syed’s cellphone near the burial site and therefore deserved a new trial, the Associated Press reports.

The Serial podcast focused on Syed’s case, revealing little-known evidence and raising questions about his guilt, attracting millions of listeners in the process. Spinoff podcast Undisclosed uncovered a fax cover sheet regarding the reliability of cell-phone tower evidence that Welch said persuaded him to vacate Syed’s murder conviction and order a new trial.
