‘Anastasia’ Musical To Get April Broadway Bow

20th Century Fox

Anastasia, the stage musical inspired by the 1997 Fox animated movie, will move to Broadway for an April 24 opening at the Shuberts’ Broadhurst Theatre. The production will be expanded from its premiere at the Hartford Stage this spring. The score is from Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Rocky) with a book by Terrence McNally (It’s Only A Play) — the trio that last teamed on the 2009 musical Ragtime. Stage Entertainment USA, Bill Taylor and Tom Kirdahy are producers. Darko Tresnjak (A Gentleman’s Guide To Love & Murder) directs and Peggy Hickey is choreographer.

The original Hartford cast is also making the jump including principals Christy Altomare as Anya, Derek Klena as Dmitry, John Bolton as Vlad and Caroline O’Connor as Lily.

The plot tells the romantic, adventure-filled story that spans from the Russian Empire to 1920s Paris of a brave young woman attempting to discover the mystery of her past.
