Ruben Fleischer Re-ups Overall Deal With Universal TV

Ruben Fleischer has signed a new two-year overall deal with Universal Television for The District, his company with producing partner David Bernad.

Fleischer launched The District at the onset of his first overall deal with Uni TV two years ago. Under the new pact, Fleischer and Bernad will continue as executive producers on NBC’s comedy series Superstore, whose pilot Fleischer directed, and the Freeform pilot Issues, inspired by the life of Joanna Coles, editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan. The duo also will develop new projects for broadcast, cable, and streaming services.


“In their work producing, writing or directing, Ruben and David have been instrumental in helping shape Superstore into one of the most promising comedies on NBC in the last few years,” said Pearlena Igbokwe, newly appointed President of Universal Television. “We’re looking forward to seeing their imprint on the show’s second season as well as their many future projects with the studio.”

This past season, Fleischer directed the ABC/ABC Studios comedy pilot The Second Fattest Housewife In Westport, which was picked up to series titled American Housewife. He also is set to direct and executive produce the opening two episodes of Netflix’s comedy series Santa Clarita Diet starring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be continuing our relationship with NBCUniversal,” Fleischer said. “We feel very supported by the network leadership, and are looking forward to a productive new chapter with Pearlena at the helm.”
