A 9-year-old boy falls off a cliff and ends up in a coma. It doesn’t look good, but then a doctor tells the lad’s mother, “We’re not supposed to use the word ‘miracle,’ but this might call for an exception.” Sounds like a heartwarming tale, right? Not so fast. Turns out he was pushed — and bad stuff had happened to this boy several times before. Has he cheated death again?
Here’s the first trailer for The 9th Life of Louis Drax, Horns director Alexandra Aja’s thriller that was picked up for distribution last week by Lionsgate’s Summit Premiere. Louis’ situation has attracted the attention of a neurologist (Jamie Dornan), who begins to dig into the circumstances behind the boy’s “accident.” Turns out his mother (Sarah Gadon) and father (Aaron Paul) have some splainin’ to do, and a criminal probe soon centers on Dad. The doctor tries an unorthodox and risky method of tapping into the boy’s unconscious mind, which leads to a mystery that tests the boundaries of fantasy and reality. The ominous last words we hear in the trailer are from Louis’ mom: “Maybe he figured it out. Sometimes I think he figured it all out.”
Molly Parker, Barbara Hershey and Oliver Platt co-star in the Miramax film written by Max Minghella. It opens September 2 in limited release. Have a look at the trailer and tell us what you think.
