‘Star Trek’ Family Mourns Anton Yelchin; JJ Abrams Calls Him “Brilliant”, “Kind”, “Funny”

REFRESH FOR UPDATES Anton Yelchin’s Star Trek costars and colleagues expressed sadness and shock today, as news spread of the actor’s death. Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin, Chris Doohan, son of original Star Trek actor James Doohan, Yelchin’s Star Trek reboot costars Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, and John Cho, and Star Trek: The Next Generation co-star Levar Burton were among the Trek alums who took to social media to mourn Yelchin this afternoon. Executive producer JJ Abrams, who directed 2009’s Star Trek and 2013’s Star Trek into Darkness, posted a moving tribute to Yelchin this afternoon, calling him “brilliant,” “kind,” and “supremely talented.”

Paramount Pictures also released a statement, saying that “All of us at Paramount join the world in mourning the untimely passing of Anton Yelchin. As a member of the Star Trek family, he was beloved by so many and he will missed by all. We share our deepest condolences with his mother, father and family.”
