Fox Sports Florida Subs Out Sideline Reporter Over Racial Comments In Facebook Chat

Another social media blunder, another on-air sports reporter out of work. Regional cable net Fox Sports Florida today benched Emily Austen, a part-time sideline reporter on Tampa Bay Rays and Orlando Magic games, after she let go a number of racially insensitive remarks during a Facebook chat.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that Austen on Thursday did a 35-minute chat with three dudes from the decidedly anti-PC Barstool Sports and spewed such gems as “I didn’t even know that Mexicans were that smart” and “the Chinese guy is always the smartest guy in math class.” She also recalled waiting on Jewish customers when she was a waitress in Boca Raton, FL, saying “they would complain and bitch about everything.” Austen also referred to Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love — all 6-foot-10 of him — multiple times as a “little bitch.” Watch the video above, but be warned of serious NSFW-ness right off the bat and throughout.

Fox Sports Florida reacted swiftly but with little gray as to whether Austen has been flat-out fired or just suspended. Many outlets are reporting that she has been let go, but there’s been no official word. “We were made aware that Emily Austen appeared in a social media video unaffiliated with Fox Sports in which she made insensitive and derogatory comments,” the outlet said in a statement. “She was not speaking on behalf of Fox Sports, nor do we condone any of the statements she made in the video. Emily has been advised that her comments were unacceptable, and she is not scheduled to appear on any upcoming Fox Sports Florida or Fox Sports Sun broadcasts.”

The Times said Austen also hosted sports-related shows including Inside the Rays. The Facebook chat has been deleted from the Barstool Sports site but lives on in cybersapace
