E.T. meets Christine? No. Lilo’s Stitch meets The Car? Nope. Flipper meets Maximum Overdrive? 0-for-3. Welcome to the first trailer for Monster Trucks, the long-delayed CG/live-action pic that hits theaters in January — its fourth release date. As he gears up to play MacGyver in the fall and is onscreen as Havok in X-Men: Apocalypse, Lucas Till stars as Tripp, an average guy still living in the town where he was born who cobbles together a truck from scraps. Then there’s a weird accident at a nearby oil-drilling site, and It is unleashed.
“We’re looking for something unusual — something dangerous,” some ominous-looking dudes tell Tripp. The thing they’re looking for has taken up residence in the kid’s truck. But this creature, which he names “Creech,” is really just a fun-loving fish out of water. Can Tripp keep Creech away from the evil guys? And what about the love interest (Jane Levy)?
Got all that?
Holt McCallany, Barry Pepper, Tucker Albrizzi, Danny Glover, Amy Ryan, Rob Lowe, Frank Whaley, and Thomas Lennon co-star in Monster Trucks, from Ice Age director Chris Wedge. Production on the film, which was announced as another possible franchise for the studio in 2013, began on May 13, 2014. First Monster Trucks was dated for May 29, 2015, then that Christmas, then March 2016, and now Paramount will release it January 13. Have a look at the trailer and give us your thoughts.
