‘Chelsea’ Executive Producer Bill Wolff Departs Netflix Talk Show

Bill Wolff is departing Chelsea, Chelsea Handler’s new Netflix talk show, on which he served as executive producer/showrunner. The move comes three weeks and nine episodes into the program’s run. Chelsea — marking Netflix’s first foray into the talk show arena — is set for 90 half-hour episodes this year, three a week, streamed on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Episode 9 with guest Ashton Kutcher was released this afternoon. There will be no disruption in Chelsea‘s production schedule; it is slated to shoot through December.

“I’m grateful that Bill was part of the pioneering effort to get Netflix’s first talk show off the ground,” said host/executive producer Chelsea Handler.

Bill WolffWolff is not expected to be replaced, with no one being brought in. The rest of the show’s team will remain in place with no designated showrunner and Handler continuing to be very involved creatively.

“I am excited for Chelsea as she continues to produce her singular vision for a television talk show,” Wolff said. “My friends at Netflix provide the foremost platform in developing ambitious and compelling creative content.”

While Handler’s docuseries for Netflix, Chelsea Does, has been well-received and is considered an awards contender, her talk show has been met with mixed reaction so far.

Talk show veteran Wolff joined Chelsea last September, days after the end of his rocky one-season stint as executive producer of The View. He and Handler spent the last nine months prepping the new talker, which mixes field pieces and studio interviews.

Before joining The View, from 2005-14, Wolff was VP Primetime Programming at MSNBC, where he created and executive produced The Rachel Maddow Show (2008-14). He began his career at ESPN and won two Emmy Awards for Best Sports Journalism (1990 and 1996) for the network’s Outside The Lines. Following ESPN, Wolff embarked on a career as a screenwriter and penned the 2005 Fox movie Rebound.
