Billboard Music Awards Ratings Fall To 4-Year Low In Demo – Update

UPDATE, 11:22 AM: The songs have been sung, the awards given out and now the final numbers are in for the 2016 Billboard Music Awards. Despite being live for the very first time, the fast nationals are not that far off the fast-affiliate ratings of earlier this morning with the three-hour show getting a 3.1 rating among adults 18-49 and 9.6 million viewers.

Down 18% from 2015, that’s a four-year demo low for the dick clark productions show on an admittedly competitive night. With a decline of 14% in viewership, last night was marked a three-year audience low.

PREVIOUS, 8:56 AM: The 2016 Billboard Music Awards saw wins by Adele, The Weeknd, Rihanna and Justin Bieber last night as well the Go-Gos reuniting and an emotional tribute to Prince by Madonna and Stevie Wonder. Airing live across the country for the first time, the Las Vegas-hosted ceremony drew a 6.1/10 in metered market results. On a packed night of NBA playoffs, Game Of Thrones on HBO, the midseason finale of Fear The Walking Dead and the premiere of Preacher on AMC, that’s down 20% in MM ratings from last year.

The 2015 Billboard Music Awards ended up with a 3.8/12 rating among adults 18-49 and 11.2 million total viewers. Those were 12-year and 14-year highs, respectively, for the dick clark productions awards show. Because of the inaugural live nature of this year’s event, ABC is cautioning that fast-affiliate ratings will be inaccurate and that later fast national numbers will provide a clearer perspective. As it stands now in those fast-affiliate numbers, BMA pulled in a 2.9/9 in the key demo with 8.87 million watching — a fall of 24% from last year and a four-year 18-49 low.

Having said that, with a 7 PM America’s Funniest Home Videos (1.2/5) ending its latest season even with its last original, ABC still easily won the Big 4 night with a 2.5/8 rating and 8.01 million viewers. We’ll update with more ratings when we get them.

Speaking of the NBA playoffs, in games that have seen surging ratings and upsets all over the place, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s lambasting of current champs the Golden State Warriors 133-105 last night was a sight to see in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals. And for TNT, there were a lot watching that sight: Sunday’s 8-10:41 PM ET matchup scored a 5.9 household rating. Winning the competitive night on cable, last night game was up 25% over the comparative 2014 Game 3 of the Thunder-San Antonio Spurs on TNT. Sunday’s game peaked with a 6.9 HH rating from 8:45-9 PM ET.

As for the rest of the Big 4’s primetime, NBC took some not unexpected hits considering the competition, with Dateline at 8 PM (0.6/2) and 10 PM (0.7/2) down a tenth and tw0-tenths, respectively, from last week. The Carmichael Show (0.5/2) declined 38% from its May 15 airing to hit a series low in early numbers, while the now cancelled Crowded (0.4/3) was down 43% in its finale.

A bunch fn season finales on Fox saw The Simpsons (1.0/4), Family Guy (1.2/4) and Bob’s Burgers (0.9/3) all down from last week, their season averages and a year ago, while the now-shuttered Bordertown (0.5/2) was even. CBS’ 7 PM (0.8/3) 60 Minutes dropped 20% from its May 15 show with the 8 PM (0.8/3) version down the same. Undercover Boss (0.8/2) had it a bit better, with an 11% decline.
