EXCLUSIVE: Here is a look at After the Storm, Japanese writer-director Kore-eda Hirokazu’s family drama that premieres tonight in the Un Certain Regard sidebar at Cannes.

un certain regard logoAbe Hiroshi stars Ryota, a former celebrated author who now blows the money he makes as a private eye on gambling and barely can make his child-support payments. After his father’s death, his ex-wife (Maki Yoko) and aging mother (Kiki Kilin) seem to be moving on with their lives. Renewing contact with his initially distrusting family, Ryota struggles to take back control of his existence and to find a lasting place in the life of his young son (Yoshizawa Taiyo) – until a stormy summer night offers them a chance to truly bond again.

This clip shows Ryota and his ex bickering over his interest in being a father to the boy. “This is a scene between a man and a woman, where you see differences in their values and why they ultimately didn’t make it as a couple,” Kore-eda said. “It’s a situation that a lot of people can relate to — people changing over time, values having the ability to split people apart. It’s so important to be on the same page, and this depicts a very real argument with funny moments.”

Writer-director Kore-eda is a Cannes veteran, with multiple Palme d’Or competitors including last year’s Our Little Sister and 2013’s Like Father, Like Son, which won a Jury Prize. Wild Bunch is handling international sales for After the Storm at Cannes, with Gaga Corp on Asian sales.
