‘The Martian’ Team Coming Together Again At 20th Century Fox For Andy Weir Pitch

EXCLUSIVE: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. 20th Century Fox just acquired an untitled pitch from Andy Weir, the author of The Martian, which was nominated for seven Oscars this year, including Best Picture. Weir will write the screenplay for Martian filmmakers Simon Kinberg (via his Genre Films) and director Ridley Scott (via his Scott Free Productions), who will produce this project. The story is being kept under wraps.

This follows Fox’s acquisition just last week of screen rights to the S. Craig Zahler novel Wraiths of the Broken Land, which Scott will direct with Martian screenwriter Drew Goddard writing the script. The film — this one a Western, set near the Mexican border at the turn of the previous century — will be produced by both of them along with Scott Free’s Michael Schaefer, Genre Films’ Kinberg and Aditya Sood. The Martian team again, sans Weir.

This new one by Weir also will be overseen by Sood and Schaefer, with Steve Asbell overseeing for Fox.

The Martian was not only a critical success for the studio but also rocketed to a domestic box office gross of $228.4 million and $401.7M internationally for an impressive worldwide total of $630.1M.

Weir is repped by CAA and by David Fugate at Launch Books.
