After A Tortured History, Four Relativity Titles To See Light Of Day

Four Relativity Media films are making their way back on the schedule in the wake of the entertainment company formerly emerging from Chapter 11 last month. All of these titles have endured some sort of shell-game maneuvers on the calendar and legal battles as Relativity has tried to get its house in order.

The Kate Bosworth thriller Before I Wake will finally open on September 9. The pic was initially dated for last year on May 8, and then September 25. The last glimpse of it was on April 8. Even though the film had a trailer, exhibitors and rival distribs knew during the spring the pic wasn’t coming out due to the fact that it wasn’t landing on any tracking boards, nor was their a marketing campaign behind it. Before I Wake will now play during the crowded post-Labor Day corridor against Warner Bros’ Clint Eastwood movie Sully, Lionsgate’s animated pic The Wild Life, and Screen Gems’ When The Bough Breaks.

MastermindsThe Lorne Michael production Masterminds starring Zach Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig, Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis was last seen on the schedule back on October 9, 2015, but was postponed when Relativity’s financial woes began kicking in. Masterminds will now open on September 30, raising that weekend’s wide releases to five along with Lionsgate’s Deepwater Horizon, High Top’s Delirium, STX’s Edge Of Seventeen, and 20th Century Fox’s Tim Burton movie Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children.

Masterminds has had quite a beaten path to the big screen. Last August, RKA Film Financing attempted to seize control of the Jared Hess-directed title along with Halle Berry thriller Kidnap (which now has a date of December 2, the only sole wide release on that date), The Disappointments Room and other titles. RKA argued it had liens on the films and that Relativity had fraudulently spent money on overhead costs instead of the agreed-upon P&A. In addition to Masterminds and Kidnap, the financier DisappointmentsRoomclaimed it was covering P&A on Before I Wake and Disappointments Room. The latter Kate Beckinsale movie is now dated for November 18, going up against Warner Bros’ Harry Potter spinoff/prequel Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. Soon after making its claims, RKA Film Financing, agreed to withdraw objections to Relativity’s proposed bankruptcy process.

At one point, Netflix was seeking to stream Masterminds and Disappointments Room ahead of their theatrical release dates, but a federal bankruptcy judge said in May he wouldn’t allow that, since the premature debut of those pics would have a negative impact on Relativity’s restructuring.
