Vanessa Redgrave & Joely Richardson Team For Henry James Adaptation ‘Aspern Papers’ – Cannes

Mother and daughter Vanessa Redgrave and Joely Richardson are teaming to star in Julien Landais’ Aspern Papers. Film House Germany is producing and financing the prestige project, which is based on one of Henry James’ best-known and most acclaimed tales. Jean Pavas, Julien Landais and Hannah Bhuiya adapted the screenplay. Film House Germany’s Gabriela Bacher will produce with Landais under his Princeps Films label. James Ivory, Charles S. Cohen, Joely Richardson, Francois Sarkozy, and Film House Germany’s Christian Angermayer and Klemens Hallmann are exec producing. Gary Rubin, EVP of Cohen Media Group, will serve as an associate producer.

Carnaby International will handle international rights with Cohen Media releasing in the U.S.

Charles S. Cohen recently acquired the Merchant Ivory brand and the worldwide distribution and remake rights to 19 features along with nine shorts and documentaries, including Howard’s End, which premieres in Cannes Classics on Thursday. Ivory is on-board with Charles S. Cohen as creative director, consulting on the restoration, remake and release of each Merchant Ivory film.

Set in Venice in 1885, Morton Vint, an ambiguous young writer fascinated by iconic romantic poet Jeffrey Aspern, strives to get his hands on the letters Aspern wrote to his beautiful mistress, Juliana Bordereau (Redgrave). Now, decades later, Juliana lives in a Venetian palazzo with her niece (Richardson), whom she dominates and Morton will come to seduce. But do these letters really exist and what scandalous information about Juliana and Aspern will they bring to the surface?

“James has a tremendous amount of trust in Julien, having endorsed the screenplay and serving as an executive producer on this classy but very modern tale of dreams, obsession and Byronic adventures,” said Film House Germany’s Gabriela Bacher.

Landais is repped by Artmedia. Redgrave is repped by CAA and Gavin Barker Associates. Richardson is repped by ICM Partners and The Artists Partnership.

Film House Germany recently announced Marco Kreuzpaintner’s Undying starring Patrick Schwarzenegger and Liana Liberato, which they will produce with Thunder Road Pictures, and it is in post-production on David Leveaux’s The Kaiser’s Last Kiss staring Lily James, Jai Courtney and Christopher Plummer.
