‘Life In Pieces’ Renewed For Season 2 By CBS

CBS kicked off the renewal decisions on its freshman series with a pickup of comedy Life in Pieces. The well-received family show is believed to be one of just a couple of single-camera CBS comedies to get to a second season since the end of M*A*S*H* in 1983 and the first in more than 2 decades, since Brooklyn Bridge ran for two seasons from 1991-1993.

Life in Pieces, which has received a full-season order, had been considered a safe bet to return. The series, from 20th TV, got CBS’ premier half-hour slot, behind flagship The Big Bang Theory, and was kept there for its entire freshman run. With BBT as a lead-in, Life in Pieces ranked as this season’s No. 1 new comedy in viewers (10.53 million) and adults 18-49 (2.7 rating).

The only reason for concern in the Life in Pieces renewal was the frayed relationship between CBS and 20th TV, who squabbled over the back order for the show last fall and then again earlier this year over the pilot order to a drama from Matt Nix, which fell through after the two sides could not come to a business agreement. But Life in Pieces is well liked by CBS brass, who have supported it and had been high on its return.

CBS might continue with its renewal decisions today. Unless there is another extension, I hear the network has until end of day today to decide on the future of the superhero drama Supergirl, from Warner Bros. TV, which also has been a subject of discussion for a possible move to sibling CW. Medical drama Code Black, from ABC Studios and CBS TV Studios, has solidified its positions and looks good to return but is expected to undergo tweaks. Limitless, which is fully owned by CBS, is considered 50-50 at best and does not look very promising at the moment. Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders has done pretty well.

Life in Pieces, from 20th TV and Kapital Entertainment, stars Dianne Wiest, James Brolin, Zoe Lister-Jones, Colin Hanks, Angelique Cabral, Thomas Sadoski, Betsy Brandt, Dan Bakkedahl, Niall Cunningham, Holly J. Barrett and Giselle Eisenberg. The executive producers are creator Justin Adler, Aaron Kaplan, director Jason Winer, Jeff Morton and Brad Copeland.
