A guy is introduced at a swanky 1930s Hollywood party as a two-time Academy Award winner. “Wow, congratulations,” the town newbie says to him. He replies: “Thank you. You’ve never heard of me — I’m a writer.” Welcome to Café Society.
Here’s a trailer for the latest from writer-director Woody Allen, which opens the Cannes Film Festival tomorrow night. Jesse Eisenberg stars as the fresh-off-the-bus kid looking to make it in the movie industry. He’s “half-bored, half-fascinated,” but he’s got an in that most of his ilk don’t: His uncle (Steve Carell) is an agent, who teams the lad with his assistant (Kristen Stewart). From there, it’s beautiful women, a run-in with thugs, jazz at 2 AM and maybe even irrational love.
Jeannie Berlin, Blake Lively, Parker Posey, Corey Stoll and Ken Stott also star in the film, for which Amazon Studios reportedly paid eight figures. Lionsgate will release Café Society after its Croisette bow, starting a platform rollout on July 15. Take a gander at the trailer and tell us what you think.
