As part of NBC Universal’s presentation at Deadline’s all day Emmys Contenders event last month at the DGA, I got to sit down and talk with star and producer America Ferrera about her new NBC comedy series , Superstore which was recently picked up for a second season. With former The Office writer Justin Spitzer along as a creative force, Superstore , set in a Target-like department store , is aiming to become the successor to The Office as the go-to workplace comedy on TV. In our conversation Ferrera and I talk about Spitzer’s writing, the idea of seeing the workplace through the eyes of an average American, the tricky line of doing broad comedy that it also character-driven , and the key component of true diversity in the casting of the show. Ferrera also talks about how the series is allowing her to stretch as a producer and be part of the conversation in how the show gets shaped. For the role she also attempted to do actual research in a real Target store but was quickly found out when she went “undercover”.
