EXCLUSIVE: XLrator Media and Benattar/Thomas Productions have kicked off production on their latest action-thriller, The Base, starring Cam Gigandet (The Magnificent Seven, Twilight) and directed by Jesse Gustafson. XLrator Media is eyeing a 2017 worldwide release date via its Turbo action label and is also selling foreign rights at the Cannes market beginning this week.
Rick Benattar, Nigel Thomas, Barry Gordon and Michael Radiloff and are producing the film, which is being financed by The Fyzz Facility, with Wayne Marc Godfrey and Robert Jones executive producers.
Gigandet stars as the leader of a “Dirty Dozen”-esque band of military prisoners who have to fight off a terrorist attack on the remote “black site” prison in which they’re being held, which, unknown to them, is a cover for a secret drone control facility. The pic is based on an original story by Thomas and Benattar and written by Guy Stevenson.
Gustafson, a military veteran, wrote and directed the short film Day 39, a finalist for a student Academy Award in 2015. He also penned Ace Of Spades, an Academy Nicholl Fellowship finalist.
Benattar/Thomas’ overall production and global distribution deal with XLrator previously spawned Paradox with Zoë Bell and Malik Yoba, the Stevenson-penned The Last Heist with Henry Rollins coming in June and The Fixer with Tom Hopper out in November.
Gigandet is repped by UTA and Luber/Rocklin.
