British director Tom Harper (War & Peace) is set to direct the opening episode of AMC’s straight-to-series drama The Son, from Sonar Entertainment and AMC Studios. The series stars Sam Neill whom Harper directed in the BBC series Peaky Blinders.

Based on the book by Philipp Meyer, The Son is a multi-generational epic tale of the story of America’s birth as a superpower through the bloody rise and fall of one Texas family. Meyer, Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy wrote the adaptation, with Kevin Murphy serving as executive producer/showrunner. Michael Connolly also executive produces.

Harper replaces Michelle McLaren who was originally slated to direct the pilot episode but dropped out for scheduling reasons. Production will begin in Austin, TX in June for premiere in 2017.
