‘24 Legacy’, Lee Daniels’ ‘Star’ Get Series Orders By Fox

24 is back. Fox has given an early series order to 24: Legacy, its drama pilot that reboots the 24 franchise with brand new leedanielscharacters and cast, from creators Manny Coto & Evan Katz, Imagine TV’s Brian Grazer and Howard Gordon. They are being joined by original star Kiefer Sutherland who has come on board as executive producer. Also picked up to series is Lee Daniels’ music-themed off-cycle drama pilot Star, giving the Empire co-creator two series on the Fox schedule next season. Both 24: Legacy, which has received a 12-episode order, and Star, picked up for 13 episodes with Lenny Kravitz set as a guest star, hail from 20th Century Fox TV. They are the first broadcast pilots to get series orders for next season.

24The 24: Legacy  pilot, starring Corey Hawkins, Miranda Otto and Jimmy Smits, had been a frontrunner from the start. It extends one of Fox’s most popular and lucrative drama brands with global recognition, it is done by key creative auspices from the original series, and it is based on a script that had the network brass raving about when they got it last December. The filmed pilot had been garnering strong early buzz over the past few weeks.

katzcotoWritten by 24 veterans Coto and Katz and directed by Stephen Hopkins (who helmed the original 24 pilot), 24: Legacy centers on military hero Eric Carter (Hawkins) whose trouble follows him back to the U.S. – compelling him to ask CTU for help. The show chronicles an adrenaline-fueled race against the clock to stop a devastating terrorist attack on United States soil – in the real-time format that the original series became famous for. Like limited series 24: Live Another Day, 24: Legacy will run for 12 episodes a season instead of the 24 the original series produced each year, so there will be some time jumps in the 24-hour window covered by each installment.

This is the third 24 series on Fox. The original, which ran for 8 seasons, earned a best drama series Emmy Award. Limited series 24: Live Another Day aired in 2014. 24: Legacy is the first 24 series without original star Sutherland. His involvement in the new series will be strictly behind the scenes; he won’t be reprising his 24 character of Jack Bauer. Sutherland currently stars in the new ABC drama Designated Survivor.

Set in Atlanta, Star revolves around three talented young singers (Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny and Brittany O’Grady) who navigate the cut-throat music business on their road to success. The series will feature original music, along with musical fantasy sequences, as the girls dream of their future.

The pilot, directed by Daniels, underwent some re-shoots but also has been an early favorite for a series pickup. Its cast includes Queen Latifah, Benjamin Bratt, and Nicholas Gonzalez. Lenny Kravitz, who appeared in Daniels’ The Butler, will be featured as a guest star.

Daniels and Donaghy executive produce alongside Pamela Oas Williams and Effie Brown.
