Susan Sarandon’s ‘The Meddler’ Solid’, ‘Hologram’ Healthy While ‘Green Room’ Holds Tight: Specialty Box Office

Sony Pictures Classics’ The Meddler and a single showing of the long-titled How to Let Go of the World and Love All Things Climate Can’t Change from International WOW Films/HBO Documentary Films had decent opening weekends, though nothing really catapulted the Specialty Box Office. A24’s Green Room outpaced most newcomers with an expansion in its second weekend, while Men & Chickens got off to a slow start. Elvis & Nixon missed its mark, averaging just under twelve hundred dollars in 381 theaters. Opening better was Tom Hanks’ A Hologram For The King in several hundred theaters, and IFC Films’ Tale Of Tales in two locations.

Susan SarandonSPC opened second-time feature filmmaker Lorene Scafaria’s comedy-drama The Meddler starring Susan Sarandon, Rose Byrne and J.K. Simmons in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles Friday to a worthy start. The feature easily outpaced its limited release competition, grossing over $60K for a $15,067 average. “I think it’s one of the best of her career,” enthused SPC co-president Michael Barker earlier this week, hinting that Sarandon may be a player in Awards season. “I think that people will remember [Sarandon’s performance] throughout the year… Look at Lady In The Van and Hello, My Name is Doris. These are films that have substantial audiences with major actresses doing solid performances that the public wants to see.” Sarandon was recently honored with the Cinema Icon Award at CinemaCon.

Sony Classics will expand The Meddler slowly over the next several weeks. Barker said he expects the title to be at its widest around May 20.

Further down the food chain was the Sundance and Sarasota doc How to Let Go of the World: And Love All Things Climate Can’t Change, grossing the weekend’s second-best per theater average among the newcomers. In a single location on this Earth Day weekend, the feature by Josh Fox grossed $13,775, averaging $6,750. The New York opening kicks off a 100-city tour of the film over the next few months, taking Fox to numerous markets over the next six weeks, according to distributors International WOW and HBO Documentary Films. The film heads to L.A. June 3, coinciding with California’s Primary elections.

Hologram for a King

Tom Hanks starrer A Hologram For The King opened in 401 theaters over the weekend, grossing just over $1.2 million and averaging just over $3K. The figure is lower than several of Hanks’ last releases including the October opener Bridge Of Spies, which was a wide twenty-eight hundred theater debut, averaging $5,648. Mirroring Hologram‘s limited release was his 2013 title Saving Mr. Banks, which grossed over $413K in 15 theaters, averaging a cool $27,558, though falling short of Oscar attention. Hologram, which bowed at the Tribeca Film Festival, will have about 600 runs next weekend.

Pantelion/Lionsgate’s Compadres also had a mid-level roll out, opening with a slightly higher PTA. The Mexican-produced English-language feature grossed $1.35M in 368 theaters, averaging $3,668. Averaging higher, though with only two runs was IFC Films’ 2015 Cannes feature Tale Of Tales by Italian director Matteo Garrone. Starring Salma Hayek, Tale grossed $9K, averaging $4,500. IFC did well with the filmmaker’s 2008 feature Gomorrah which only grossed $5,532 in its opening theatrical weekend in a single location. It nevertheless went on to gross $1.57M domestically (and $34.8M worldwide). Said IFC Films’ Mark Boxer this week: “We liked the opening date [to be] in spring so we can stay far enough ahead of the summer studio releases, and believe there is room in the marketplace to grow the platform release.”

Elvis & Nixon

Bleecker Street’s Elvis & Nixon and Drafthouse Films’ Men & Chickens had slow starts. Elvis & Nixon starring Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey in the title rolls grossed nearly $457K in 381 theaters, averaging $1,199. Danish director Anders Thomas Jensen’s Men & Chickens with Mads Mikkelsen grossed $2,565, averaging $1,283.

A24’s Green Room outshined most of the weekend’s starters as it moved into 27 additional theaters. A debut in Cannes Directors Fortnight, Green Room grossed $215K in a total of 30 locations, averaging $7,167, giving it a $330,503 two-week cume. Also holding fast in its second frame was TWC’s Sing Street, which played 20 additional runs vs. its opening weekend.. The feature grossed $132,901, averaging $5,316. Its two-week cume is nearly $218K. The Orchard took Louder Than Bombs into six additional locations for the title’s third weekend, squeaking out nearly $26K in 21 theaters for a $1,228 average. The film has cumed $90,358.


In its fourth weekend, Sony Classics added 480 theaters for Don Cheadle’s directorial debut Miles Ahead. The Miles Davis story grossed $686,655, averaging $1,303, easily sailing over the seven-figure mark at $1.38 million. In week 4, Paramount added 320 runs for Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!!, grossing $665K in 454 theaters, giving it a $1,465 average. Its cume is now over $2.35 million.

And inching closer to $12 million is Roadside Attractions/Stage 6 Films’ Sally Field starrer Hello, My Name Is Doris. In its seventh weekend, the feature grossed $648,100 averaging $1,312.
