VMAs: MTV Books Madison Square Garden For 2016 Moonman Ceremony

I want my MTVNY. The once music-focused cable net said today that this year’s MTV Video Music Awards will be held at New York’s Madison Square Garden for the first time, on August 28. That brings the show back to the city where it began 30-plus years ago.

2015 MTV Video Music Awards

The first Moonman trophies were handed out at NYC’s Radio City Music Hall in September 1984, honoring such memorable videos as the Cars’ “You Might Think,” Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and Herbie Hancock’s robo-clip “Rockit.” The 2016 edition will mark the VMAs’ 16th Gotham-based ceremony, the most recent being at Barclays Center in Brooklyn in 2013.

“The VMAs at MSG is a New York story too good to resist,” said MTV President Sean Atkins said. “The VMAs deliver some of pop culture’s most defining moments, and we’re grateful to our New York home and Madison Square Garden for rolling out the red carpet for what is sure to be the biggest night in music.”

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio looked at the bigger picture. “From the red carpet to the accolades to the performances — and everything in between — the VMAs are an incredible showcase for so many talented artists,” he said. “It also goes without saying that hosting the awards in our city means a boost to our small businesses and restaurants and more jobs for the thousands of crew members who work to bring the show into homes around the world.”
