Naomi Watts To Star In Netflix Psychological Thriller Series ‘Gypsy’

Netflix has tapped Naomi Watts as the lead in Gypsy, its psychological thriller from Universal Television, Working Title and writer Lisa Rubin. Fifty Shades of Grey helmer Sam Taylor-Johnson is directing the first two episodes of the drama, which has a 10-episode, straight-to-series order for a 2017 premiere.

Gypsy follows the journey of Jean Holloway (Watts) – a therapist who begins to develop dangerous and intimate relationships with the people in her patients’ lives.

In addition to starring, Watts will serve as an executive producer on the series alongside Rubin, Sean Jablonski, who serves as showrunner, Liza Chasin and Working Title’s Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Andrew Stearn.

Watts started her career in television in Australia. In the U.S., she starred on the short-lived NBC series Sleepwalkers before her breakout role in David Lynch’s Mulholland Dr. launched her feature career. Two-time Oscar nominee Watts is currently starring in Demolition with Jake Gyllenhaal. She has also shot The Weinstein Co.’s About Ray with Susan Sarandon and Elle Fanning, Gus Van Sant’s Sea of Trees with Matthew McConaughey, Colin Trevorrow’s The Book of Henry and the psychological thriller Shut In. She will next star in Destin Daniel Cretton’s The Glass Castle with Brie Larson. Watts is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.

Rubin also is adapting best-selling novel I Was Here by Gayle Forman for New Line and the novel Food Whore for DreamWorks.
