Big ‘Star Wars’ Wins, Expanded Network Carriage Lift MTV Movie Awards Ratings

Last night’s 2016 MTV Movie Awards drew 3.5 million total viewers to the premiere simulcast. That’s up 54% versus last year’s 2.3M. This year’s premiere was simulcast across nine Viacom networks — MTV, Comedy Central, VH1, BET, MTV2, CMT, TV Land, VH1 Classic and Logo — five more than the 2015 show.

Meanwhile, in the network’s target 12-34 demo, the simulcast-palooza clocked a 1.97 rating, up 22% versus last year.

Star Wars The Force Awakens 5Co-hosted by Kevin Hart and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the show saw Star Wars: The Force Awakens take home the trophy for Movie of the Year. Star Wars was the night’s biggest winner, also nabbing the Breakthrough Performance win for star Daisy Ridley and Best Villain for Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren.

In addition to lining up so many more Viacom networks, last year’s Amy Schumer-hosted trophy show — which moved back to 8 PM — crowded The Fault in Our Stars as movie of the year.

Mad Max Fury RoadDeadpool also took home two wins Sunday, for Best Comedic Performance and Best Fight. Other winners included Straight Outta Compton, which won for True Story, and Charlize Theron as Best Female Performance for Mad Max: Fury Road. Will Smith and Melissa McCarthy both received special awards.
