‘iHeartRadio Music Awards’ Debuts To Modest Ratings On TNT, TBS & TruTV


The iHeartRadio Music Awards had a quiet start on Turner. The cable networks last year picked up the music awards franchise with a multi-year deal after it was dropped by NBC following a two-year run, most recently drawing 5.2 million viewers and a 1.9 rating in adults 18-49 in 2015.

In a simulcast on TNT, TBS and TruTV on Sunday night, the iHeartRadio Music Awards averaged 970,000 viewers and a 0.4 from 8-11 PM on TNT and 901,000 and a 0.4 on TBS. There is no exact data for the TruTV telecast, which couldn’t crack the Top 100 cable programs of the night, but the rough estimate is close to 2.5 million viewers and 1.0 in 18-49 total. That is about half of the show’s ratings on NBC last year. (With encore same-night telecasts on all 3 networks, the iHeart Radio Music Awards’ ratings rose to 3 million viewers and more than 1.6 million adults 18-49 in Live + Same Day.)

The 2016 iHeartRadio Music Awards, which featured big-name talent like Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber, aired against The Academy of Country Music Awards on CBS and bridged Turner’s NCAA Final Four games coverage on Saturday and Monday.

Like iHeartRadio, the NCAA final had a rough transition from broadcast to cable. Airing across TNT, TBS and TruTV, Monday night’s game averaged 17.8 million viewers, down -37% from last April’s final on CBS despite a very competitive game this year that went down to the final seconds.
