EXCLUSIVE: FremantleMedia International has closed a trio of major deals on its London-set drama, Capital. Participant Media’s Pivot has acquired rights in the U.S., Shaw has taken Canada, and BBC Worldwide picked up Australia and New Zealand. The tense three-part series adaptation of the bestselling novel by John Lanchester revolves around the interconnected lives of a diverse group of Londoners who all reside on the same suburban street, Pepys Road. Kudos produces for BBC One in the UK.
Toby Jones stars with Rachael Stirling, Radoslaw Kaim, Wunmi Mosaku, Adeel Akhtar and Gemma Jones. Targeted by a mysterious hate campaign, each of the residents of Pepys Road receives an anonymous postcard through their front doors bearing the menacing message: “We Want What You Have.” But who is behind the campaign and what is it they really want? The diverse dwellers include investment banker Roger (Toby Jones), who is eagerly anticipating his £1M bonus; his spendthrift wife Arabella (Stirling); Polish builder Bogdan (Kaim); Quentina (Mosaku), the Zimbabwean refugee with a PhD who works as a traffic warden; local newsagent Ahmed (Akhtar); and the elderly Petunia (Gemma Jones), who has lived her entire life on Pepys Road, and is now contemplating death in the house in which she was born.
Jens Richter, CEO of FremantleMedia International, says, “Capital is a powerful, intelligent and character driven drama created by one of the most prolific production companies in the world. These impressive deals are a testament to the series’ ability to capture modern society in a way that’s current and universally relevant to a global audience.”
Capital was written by BAFTA-winning Peter Bowker. Executive producers include Derek Wax (The Hour) and Bowker (Marvellous) for Kudos; and Lucy Richer (The Casual Vacancy) for the BBC. Producer is Matt Strevens (Cucumber, An Adventure In Space And Time).
