Dean Strang TV Show

Former Steven Avery co-counsel Dean Strang, one of the breakout stars of Netflix’s hugely popular docuseries Making A Murderer, is toplining his own docuseries that examines legal cases. Titled Dean Strang: Road To Justice, the eight-episode series, now in development, is the first TV project for Covert Media, the production company launched last summer by veteran film exec Paul Hanson with backing from private equity fund Media Content Capital. Hanson signaled a move into TV with the hire last October of Saul Goldberg as head of unscripted television.

deanHosted by Strang, Road To Justice will investigate big legal cases that demonstrate major flaws in the criminal justice system. It will be shot in vérité style similar to Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown. Strang, who examined a possible corruption of the legal system in his book on the 1917 Milwaukee bombing and the trial that followed, will serve as an executive producer alongside Goldberg. The series has not been set up at a network yet.

Strang became an instant celebrity with a devoted social media following off of the popularity of Netflix’s Making A Murderer, which chronicled the case of convicted Wisconsin murderer Avery. Strang was Avery’s mild-mannered defense attorney who became famous for his thoughtful ruminations on the criminal justice system on the program.

CovertMedia“Through his captivating work as Steven Avery’s defense attorney that we encountered in Making A Murderer, Dean Strang has become a leading voice in the fight for justice,” said Goldberg. “We are thrilled to be working with Dean on this landmark series that will shine a light on many other extraordinary cases where the criminal justice system has failed.”

In the wake of the success of Making A Murderer, Strang —  a lawyer at StrangBradley in Madison and a law professor — and his co-counsel in the Avery case, Jerry Buting, are doing a 26-city speaking tour across the U.S. where they discuss the Avery case the broad topic of the American criminal justice system.

Covert Media’s unscripted TV department is repped by WME. Strang is repped by Ziffren Brittenham.
