‘The Catch’ Ratings Fumble In Debut, NCAA Tournament Scores For CBS

The Catch

The latest TGIT offering from Shondaland really didn’t catch on with the key demo last night, with The Catch (1.2/4) debuting soft at 10 PM. Down 14% among adults 18-49 from the How To Get Away With Murder Season 2 finale in the same slot a week ago, The Catch was slightly ahead in total viewers with 5.80 million to the Viola Davis-led show’s 5.29 million on March 17.

However, coming off the soft launches of both The Family and the quickly pink-slipped Kings And Prophets, ABC can’t take much consolation in the Catch viewership lift considering the much revamped show delivered a demo result lower than anything HTGAWM has ever had. And, HTGAWM faced the NCAA Tournament for its Season 2 finale, as The Catch did last night.

Season debut to season debut, The Catch was down 54% among the 18-49s from HTGAWM Season 2 debut on September 24 last year, and way down 69% from the series’ strapping September 25, 2014 series premiere. Spring debut to spring debut, The Catch scored 40% less than American Crime did on March 5, 2015 in the same post-Scandal slot – though that Kerry Washington-led DC-drama was in better shape itself back then ratingswise.

Coming off a Scandal (1.6/5) that was even with last week, The Catch did have 75% retention from its lead-in, which was 8% better than American Crime did last year. Kicking off TGIT on Thursday, Grey’s Anatomy (2.0/7) dipped a tenth from last week but now holds the title of the top Shondaland show and was the night’s top-rated show for a second week in a row.

No certainty yet who will win the NCAA title, but CBS certainly scored with the tournament. Yes, Villanova and Kansas won last night, but after a soft start last week, the House of Moonves put it away with a Thursday-winning 1.9/7 overall rating. While adjustments will occur, the second Thursday of this year’s tourney rose 73% over the final numbers March 17. With last week’s initial overall rating coming in with a 1.3, last night is up 46% right now without adjustments.

Both Fox’s American Idol (1.7/6) and NBC’s Shades Of Blue (1.0/4) were even with last week, with the Jennifer Lopez NYPD drama falling behind The Catch in the 10 PM slot. NBC’s only other original offering of the night was You, Me And The Apocalypse (0.6/2), which was also even with its March 17 show.

Overall, Fox won the night in total viewers with an audience of 7.96 million as Idol heads toward its series finale. The CW was all encores.
