‘War Dogs’ Trailer: Jonah Hill & Miles Teller Take The Money And Run Guns

Warner Bros Pictures

War Dogs poster“They call guys like us war dogs — bottom feeders who make money off of war without ever stepping foot in the battlefield. It was meant to be derogatory, but we kinda liked it.” Welcome to the wonderful, lucrative world of international gun running — brought to you by a couple of bros in their early 20s. That would be Jonah Hill and Miles Teller, who star in War Dogs as the real-life guys who scored a $300 million Pentagon contract to arm the Afghan military during the Iraq War with really knowing what they were getting into. Case in point, finding out they why they won the bidding: “You guys came in $53 million lower than the nearest competition.” Cue wall-kicking reaction.

The Hangover trilogy helmer Todd Phillips is back in the director’s chair for this pic, which is based on — and originally titled for — the Guy Lawson Rolling Stone article headlined “Arms and the Dudes” that told the true story of arms dealers Efraim Diveroli and David Packouz. The duo scored a contract worth over $200M to sell arms to the Afghan National Army and police, but skimped by illegally acquiring their ammo from Chinese manufacturers. The contract was suspended and Diveroli was eventually sentenced to four years in prison on federal fraud charges. In other words the film aims to do to the War on Terror what The Big Short did for the finance sector.  Phillips co-wrote War Dogs with Stephen Chin and Jason Smilovic. Produced by Joint Effort and the Mark Gordon Company, it opens August 19 via Warner Bros.
