Ringo Starr’s Animated ‘Octopus’ Garden’ From Superprod Will Swim To MIPTV

Oh what joy for every girl and boy: Song of the Sea Paris-based co-producer Superprod has linked with Simon & Schuster, Universal Music Publishing and Startling Music for the TV adaptation of Octopus’s Garden, the book based on Ringo Starr’s underwater ditty from the Beatles’ 1969 album Abbey Road.

Octopus's Gardenp9hjThe book sets Starr’s lyrics to illustrations by Ben Cort, the artist behind the best-selling Aliens Love Underpants.

“We will be pitching the project at next MIPTV in April,” Superprod principal Jeremie Fajner told Deadline, “and then in a more developed version in Annecy MIFA in June and in Cannes for MIPCOM in October.” International sales company Superights will represent global rights to the program.

Previous animation projects involving the Fab Four were The Beatles, which they didn’t like, and Yellow Submarine, which they did.

“We are particularly proud and happy to work on this great book and music,” Superprod’s Clément Calvet and Fajner said Wednesday in a joint statement. “The evergreen song by Ringo Starr and the superb drawings by Ben Cort are a wonderful setting for telling our animated stories. We are thrilled to team-up with such great talents and major partners in the music and book publishing industries.”

“We are delighted that all these leading parties have come together to work on such an exciting project. It is a real coup to be working with Superprod and we can’t wait to see their adaptation” says Alexandra Maramenides at Simon & Schuster Children’s.

Superprod coproduced (with Cartoon Saloon, Mélusine, Big Farm, Norlum) the Tomm Moore animated feature Song of the Sea, which was an Oscar nominee and European Film Awards winner in 2015. Upcoming productions include CGI animation feature film White Fang, based on the Jack London novel, in partnership with Bidibul Productions (Lux) and Big Beach (USA). Superprod currently produces The New Adventures of Geronimo Stilton for France Télévisions and RAI, in co-production with Atlantyca Entertainment.
