UCP Preps Iran-Set Novel ‘The Increment’ As TV Series; Gideon Raff To Adapt & Direct

NBC/W. W. Norton & Company

Universal Cable Productions and Hypnotic have teamed to develop a television series based on the New York Times bestselling novel The Increment. Gideon Raff (Homeland) is set to write the adaptation and direct.

A tale of deception, betrayal and moral ambiguity, The Increment explores today’s post-treaty Iran, a place where nothing is what it seems. The story is told through the points of view of Harry Pappas, a CIA officer who sets out to identify the sender of an encrypted message coming from inside one of Iran’s nuclear facilities, and Karim Molavi, an Iranian scientist driven to betray his country in order to protect it from itself.

Instrumental to the story is the UK black ops unit known as “the Increment,” a new world collection of agents — Arab, Pakistani and Iranian operatives — who can penetrate terror organizations and enemy states. A dangerous cat-and-mouse game unfolds between the Revolutionary Guard and the Western agencies.

Raff co-created and executive produced Showtime’s Homeland and FX’s Tyrant. The Increment project is a return to UCP for Raff, who co-created Dig.

“David Ignatius’s novel is a gripping, edge-of-your seat tale of deceit and revenge with fascinating characters and intricate landscapes,” said Dawn Olmstead, EVP Development at Universal Cable Productions. “We look forward to collaborating with Gideon Raff and Hypnotic as we bring this highly suspenseful thriller to life on the small screen.”

The Increment is a collaboration between UCP and Hypnotic partners Dave Bartis, Doug Liman and Gene Klein. Hypnotic is repped by CAA. is repped by WME. Ignatius is repped by CAA.

UCP has been involved in the development of several new series based on New York Times bestsellers including Lev Grossman’s The Magicians, which was recently renewed for Season 2 on Syfy, and William Wright’s The Von Bulow Affair, which will begin production later this year.
