‘Outsiders’ Renewed For Second Season By WGN America

WGN America has given a second-season pickup to drama series Outsiders seven episodes into its freshman run. Production on the 13-episode second season will begin this summer. Outsiders is WGNA’s third original scripted series, following Salem and Manhattan. All have gone to a second season. The trio will soon be joined by the network’s newest entry, drama Underground, whose premiere just set a WGNA ratings record.

Outsiders, from Sony Picture Television and Tribune Studios, has been a solid performer, averaging 2.8 million total viewers and 1.4 million Adults 25-54 season-to-date in Live+7 across multiple plays on Tuesday night. The series has boosted the network’s primetime average by +42% among total viewers and +21% among adults 25-54. Outsiders also has showed week-to-week growth. The most recent episode with Live+3 data, Episode 6, was up by +8% vs. the prior week in gross adults 25-54 audience and +1% among total viewers.

The hourlong series — created and written by award-winning playwright Peter Mattei and executive produced by Peter Tolan and Paul Giamatti  — follows the struggle of the Farrells, an off-the-grid Appalachian clan, and their battle to defend their mountain and way of life from the town below and anyone who would dare challenge them.

“We are thrilled that Outsiders has connected with fans in such a powerful and palpable way, and met our highest expectations on every possible level, thanks to Peter Mattei, Peter Tolan, our extraordinary cast, creative team and partners at Sony Pictures Television,” said WGNA president Cherniss.

Outsiders is executive produced by Mattei, Fedora Entertainment’s Tolan, Touchy Feely Films’ Giamatti, Michael Wimer, and Dan Carey. The series’ ensemble cast includes David Morse, Thomas M. Wright, Ryan Hurst, Joe Anderson, Gillian Alexy, Kyle Gallner, Christina Jackson, Francie Swift and Phyllis Somerville.
