Protagonist Posts Strong Sales On Oren Moverman’s ‘The Dinner’ And Other EFM Slate

Protagonist Pictures enjoyed its best ever EFM in Berlin with a slew of sales on its slate, most notably for Oren Moverman’s The Dinner. The multi-character drama, starring Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Steve Coogan and Rebecca Hall, virtually sold out with deals with Videa (Italy), Dea Planeta (Spain), Phantom Film (Japan), Green Narae (Korea), California Filmes (Latin America), Tanweer (Greece and Turkey), Front Row Entertainment (Middle East), Lev Film (Israel), Freeman Distribution, Monolith and Blitz Film & Video Distribution (CEE), Penny Black Media (Airlines), and a top-notch distributor for Germany and Switzerland. Other deals are pending.

Ben Wheatley’s action thriller Free Fire, starring Oscar winner Brie Larson, Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy and Sharlto Copley, was sold to Metropolitan Filmexport in France, Volga Film for CIS and Baltics, Front Row Entertainment for the Middle East, Queen for Indonesia, with a deal for Japan imminent. Sony had already picked up a bunch of international territories.

Whit Stillman’s period comedy Love & Friendship sold to Academy 2 for Italy, KSM for Germany, Forum Films for Poland, with deals being finalized for Spain and China. Cinetic brokered a Canadian sale to Mongrel Media. Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions release the film domestically May 13, with Curzon Artificial Eye handing the UK release two weeks later. Transmission have bought the film for Australia and New Zealand, NonStop Entertainment for Scandinavia, Frenetic Films for Switzerland, Zon Lusomundo for Portugal, Forum Films for Israel, Karantanija for Former Yugoslavia, Movieturk for Turkey, Sookie Pictures for Korea, Proview Entertainment for Taiwan, Fox for Asia PTV, California Filmes for Latin America and Jaguar Distribution for Airlines. France will open with Sophie Dulac Distribution and Benelux with Cineart in deals negotiated with the producer.

British filmmaker Andrea Arnold’s American Honey, starring Shia LaBeouf, sold in France to Diaphana Distribution, in Latin America to Sun Distribution, in Benelux to Cineart, in South Korea to T Cast, Israel to Lev, Middle East to Front Row Entertainment, Turkey to Kurmaca and Former Yugoslavia to MCF. A24 will release in the U.S.

Psychological thriller The Ones Below from writer-director David Farr sold to Impacto Cine for Latin America, Lev for Israel and Penny Black Media for Airlines. Sales to Italy and Canada are currently in negotiation. Previously unannounced deals include France (Septieme Factory/Seven Sept), Spain (Corbi Media), Portugal (Zon Lusomundo), Turkey (Mars Production), Middle East (Front Row Entertainment), China (DDDream), South Korea (Sidus), and Asia PTV (Fox). Icon will open the film in the UK on March 11 and Magnolia will open in the U.S. on May 27.

The Michael Fassbender-Brendan Gleeson starrer Trespass Against Us from director Adam Smith and writer/producer Alistair Siddons, sold in Italy to Videa and to Green Narae in Korea.

“The independent market felt reinvigorated at Berlin and we had a very enthusiastic response to our films,” said Protagonist chief exec Mike Goodridge. “We have been striving to work with the most original and assured film-makers and I feel that at Sundance and Berlin, we offered the fruits of those efforts to the marketplace.
