‘Star Trek’: Rod Roddenberry & Trevor Roth Join CBS Digital Series As EPs

CBS’ upcoming new Star Trek series has recruited Federation royalty into the production as Roddenberry Entertainment President Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, son Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, has joined the series as an executive producer along with Roddenberry Entertainment COO Trevor Roth. They join Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin and Bryan Fuller, who was previously announced as the new series showrunner. Roddenberry Entertainment will also co-produce alongside CBS Television Studios, Secret Hideout and Living Dead Guy Productions.

Rod & Gene Roddenberry“Gene Roddenberry, the Great Bird of the Galaxy, left a finely feathered nest for all who love ‘Star Trek’ to enjoy,” said Fuller in a statement. “And it is only fitting that Rod Roddenberry and Roddenberry Entertainment join our new Trek adventure to ensure that his father’s legacy of hope for the future and infinite diversity in infinite combinations runs through our tales as Gene Roddenberry intended.”

“Moral dilemmas, human issues, complex characters and a genuine sense of optimism: These are the cornerstones of Star Trek and are what have made it such an influential and beloved franchise for the last 50 years,” said Rod in a statement. “While I will always be humbled by its legacy and the legions of fans who are its guardians, it’s a genuine honor to be joining a team of imaginative and incredibly capable individuals whose endeavor it is to uphold the tenets of Star Trek’s legacy while bringing it to audiences in a new era and on a contemporary platform.”

That mission to continue Gene Roddenberry’s legacy – viewers will of course determine if it will be a five year mission – has been all over recent Star Trek hirings. Last week it was announced that Nicholas Meyer, director of Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, has joined the new series as an exec producer and writer.

While plot and setting details have not been revealed at this time, the new Star Trek series will be unrelated to Paramount’s reboot film franchise, the next installment of which, Star Trek Beyond, is directed by Justin Lin and set to hit theaters in summer 2016. Star Trek will premiere in January 2017 with a preview broadcast on CBS followed by an exclusive run in the U.S. on CBS All Access. The series will be distributed concurrently on multiple platforms worldwide by CBS Studios International.
