‘The Real O’Neals’ Ratings Debut OK, ‘Rosewood’ Returns Down, ‘Mysteries Of Laura’ Finale Up From 2015

Wednesday was a night of beginnings, endings and returns that left primetime all over the map with highs and lows. The real beginning was the double-dose debut of The Real O’Neal’s on ABC at 8:30 PM (1.8/6) and 9:30 PM (1.9/6). Compared to the last originals of The Goldbergs and black-ish in the slots last week, the new comedy was down 5% and even, respectively, among adults 18-49 for an OK Big 4 start. Moved to 8 PM, last night’s Dirty Dancing-themed The Goldbergs (2.0/7) actually ticked up a tenth from last week – not a bad move and a nice lead-in for TRO.

However, when The Real O’Neals is compared to the last comedy that ABC launched with such a one-two punch, things got very real. The 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM airings of TRO tumbled 29% and 17% from when Fresh Off The Boat debuted on Wednesday, February 4, 2015, in the same slots. That small rise between the two TROs was certainly aided by Modern Family (2.6/9) at 9 PM. The highest-rated show of the night, Modern Family was up 4% in the demo. That 9:30 PM TRO saw a drop of 27% from its lead-in. The Real O’Neals moves to its regular Tuesday 8:30 PM slot on March 8, right after FOTB. Ending ABC’s evening last night, a very powerful American Crime (0.8/3) declined 11% from last week.

Overall, ABC was just behind Wednesday’s demo winner CBS with a 1.7/6 rating to the House of Moonves’ 1.8/6. CBS also won the night in total viewers with 8.34 million watching.

Having moved up to the top 18-49 spot with last week’s No. 1 Fox sliding to a 1.0/3 fourth place without American Idol, CBS saw upticks all round. The second-most watched show of the night with 9.19 million, Survivor rose 16% from its February 24 show. In the third week of its 32nd iteration, the Mark Burnett-produced series hit a season high in early numbers with no Idol in its slot. The most watched show of the night with 9.22 million, Criminal Minds (1.9/6) bopped up 6% in the 18-49s. Now that Code Black’s inaugural season is over, a special CSI: Cyber (1.2/4) filled the 10 PM slot. The procedural spinoff was up 33% from its most recent broadcast in its regular Sunday slot.

“Up” was not the word you’d use for the winter break return of Rosewood (0.9/3) last night. With no Empire lead-out to fuel the night, the Morris Chestnut starrer fell a harsh 40% from its last original of December 2 and hit a new low. With that, Hell’s Kitchen (1.0/3) also took a stumble, falling 23% among adults 18-49.

Absent Arrow, the CW instead played a weak Greatest Animal Commercials Countdown (0.3/1) and an encore of the MADtv 20th Anniversary Reunion (0.3/1). Star City’s archer returns on March 23 BTW.

The Mysteries of Laura (1.2/4) finished its second season with a 20% rise in the demo to match a season high — again not facing Idol. Finale-to-finale, TMOL was up 9% from its Season 1 ender of May 20 last year. Law & Order: SVU (1.6/5) also rose a bit, up 7% from last week. Ending the night, Chicago P.D. (1.5/5) was even with its February 24 show.
