Former Soviet President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Mikhail Gorbachev is to be the subject of a biopic from Fábrica de Cine and Cinema for Peace. Mexico City- and LA-based Fabrica de Cine recently produced Martin Scorsese’s Silence which Paramount is releasing. It’s headed by Gaston Pavlovich who is a producer on Silence and has also worked with Gorbachev in Latin America. Gorbachev has given his consent to the producers for a feature film about the glasnost and perestroika proponent’s personal journey through the end of the Cold War. Gorbachev was the first and last President of the Soviet Union, serving from March 1990 until the union’s dissolution in 1991 after having been General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union since 1985. I’m told this is not related to the project that HBO Films began developing in 2013. Fabrica’s prior projects include co-financing Tom Hanks-starrer A Hologram For The King.
