With the gold man going to Inside Out tonight, again the big winner of this year’s Annies has proven to be the winner of the Oscar for Animated Feature Film. Long favored, the Amy Poehler-led Pixar/Disney pic about the often competing primary emotions within an 11-year-old girl is the fourth film in a row from Disney or a Disney-owned entity to win the category. Brave won in 2013, Frozen iced out its opponents in 2014, and Big Hero 6 snagged the prize away from favored How To Train Your Dragon 2 last year.

While 2015’s HTTYD2 was a rare recent exception, before tonight the big winner at the Annies has also taken home the Academy Award in nine of 14 years since the Best Animated Feature category was introduced. Inside Out not only took top prize among its animation peers on February 6 but also previously snared prizes at the PGA and the Golden Globes. This is the second film directed by Peter Docter to win the animated Oscar – 2009’s Up was also helmed by him.

Released on June 9 after debuting at Cannes the month before, the pic is also up for Best Original Screenplay at the 88th Academy Awards but lost out to Spotlight. Having taken in almost $857 million worldwide, Inside Out was by far the most successful box office-wise of its rivals in the category tonight. The other films up for Animated Feature Film were Anomalsia, Boy & The World, Shaun The Sheep and When Marnie Was There. In a nice Pixar to Pixar piece of Oscar timing, the award was presented by Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear and Woody.

Along with Poehler as Joy, Inside Out also starred voice-over work by Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Bill Hader as Fear, Lewis Black as Anger and Mindy Kaling as Disgust with Kaitlyn Dias as 11-year old Riley Anderson. Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan voiced the roles of Riley’s just moved to San Francisco parents. The film had a total of 10 wins out of 14 nominations at the 43th Annie Awards earlier this month.
