EXCLUSIVE: Fifty Shades of Grey helmer Sam Taylor-Johnson has signed on to direct Netflix’s new, one-hour series Gypsy. By doing so, she leaves the indie feature Chappaquiddick. Both projects were vying for a summer start and Gypsy got the go-ahead from Netflix. Gypsy is a 10-episode psychological thriller created by Lisa Rubin set to debut in 2017. Also joining the series, from Universal Television and Working Title, is Satisfaction creator Sean Jablonski, who will serve as executive producer/co-showrunner alongside Rubin.

Gypsy follows the journey of Jean Holloway – a therapist who begins to develop dangerous and intimate relationships with the people in her patients’ lives. Casting will get underway immediately on the series, which Rubin and Jablonski will executive produce alongside Tim Bevan, Liza Chasin and Eric Fellner. Gypsy marks Universal Television’s third series for Netflix, joining Master of None and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Meanwhile, the producers for Chappaquiddick will now hire a new director. Mark Ciardi is producing the project via Apex Entertainment. The project is based, of course, on the true story of the tragedy that took the life of Mary Jo Kopechne after an auto accident that haunted its driver Sen. Ted Kennedy for years. Kennedy panicked and left the scene of the accident, leaving the young Kopechne to drown after he drove the car off a bridge. He didn’t report the accident for 9 hours.

That script, written by Taylor Allen and Andrew Logan, was named to the 2015 Blacklist. The writers are also executive producing along with DMG’s Chris Fenton.

Taylor-Johnson is repped by UTA and Briillstein Entertainment. Jablonski, who served as executive producer/showrunner on the first season of hit USA drama Suits, is repped by WME and Underground.
