Three years after the film was first announced and roughly six months since the first footage was shown off during D23, Disney has released the first official teaser for the remake of its 1977 semi-classic Pete’s Dragon. This is, by the way, very similar to — and possibly uses the same footage from — the teaser showed off to audiences at D23 last summer. Watch the teaser here now, and judge for yourself (assuming you were there).
As with the original, the story follows a young orphan named Pete (Oakes Fegley) who has managed to survive living alone in the woods thanks to his friendship with an invisible dragon named Elliott. He’s eventually taken in by Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), a local forest ranger whose father (Robert Redford) has long delighted local children with stories of a mysterious dragon living in the wilderness. From Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from her father’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace aims to discover where Pete came from, where he belongs and the truth about this dragon. Karl Urban co-stars in the film directed by David Lowery and written by Lowery and Toby Halbrooks.
Incidentally, thanks to seeing it for the first time (and subsequently, ad naseam) on cable when I was in elementary school, the original Pete’s Dragon is the reason multiplication table factoids like 8×8=64 were permanently burned into my brain. We’ll find out if the remake is similarly useful to the children of today when it hits U.S. theaters on August 12.
