Gail Mancuso To Direct Shondaland ABC Comedy Pilot ‘Toast’

Emmy-winning director Gail Mancuso has booked a second comedy pilot this season. The Emmy-winning helmer, who is directing and executive producing Fox’s single-camera female buddy comedy pilot The Enforcers, starring Niecy Nash and Christine Woods, also has been tapped to direct ABC’s hybrid comedy pilot Toast, from Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers’ Shondaland as well as Felicity alums and long-time friends Scott Foley and Greg Grunberg.

Written by Foley and Grunberg, Toast revolves around engaged couple Max and Paige who, over their wedding rehearsal dinner, have their eclectic family and friends give toasts recalling anecdotes about the couple — but flashbacks reveal that the toasts don’t always get it right, as we watch the true story of their complicated, funny and relatable road to marriage. Foley, Grunberg, Rhimes, Beers and Mancuso will exec produce for ABC Studios.

Directing multiple broadcast comedy pilots is harder when at least one of the pilots is single-camera. Mancuso is a rare case of a comedy director who moves back and forth between single- and multi-camera shows. On the multi-camera side, this season we have veterans James Burrows with four pilots this season and Pam Fryman with two, plus One Day at a Time at Netflix.

Mancuso won 2 Emmys for her directing work on ABC’s Modern Family. She is repped by ICM Partners.
