‘Love’ Review: A Lot To Like In Judd Apatow’s New Netflix Series

As everybody learns eventually, love is complicated. As I say in my video review above, that’s kind of true for Judd Apatow’s new Netflix series titled Love. Debuting on Friday, the first season is a TV romance of sorts well worth hooking up with — and I mean that more than just that Netflix and chill way.

Already picked up for a second season by the streaming service, the 10-episode first season of the series created by Apatow, Lesley Afrin and co-star Paul Rust is a deep, fresh and funny dive into the pitfalls, anxiety and occasional payoffs of post-modern romance. With I Love You, Beth Cooper alum Rust as the geeky TV show on-set tutor Gus, and Community’s Gillian Jacobs as the supremely self-sabotaging Mickey, this mis-matched narrative finds the This Is 40 director in sharper form than with almost anything he’s had a hand in for a while except maybe Freaks & Geeks from 1999 and that near-perfect first season of Girls in 2012.

Part of that has to do with the fact that one of the long-established advantages of having a Netflix series is that in the right hands, a story can find its pace and sense of place over time. No disrespect to FX’s You’re The Worst and Hulu’s Casual, which travel on familiar territory as Love, but with a dollop of the Before Sunrise trilogy thrown in, Love takes the awkward truths of what we all want and stumble in search of to its own deeper emotional realms.

Add to that the reality that Rust as a TV show on-set tutor and Jacobs as a satellite radio producer are so strong only makes the L.A.-centric journey both fun and formidable — which kind of is what you want with a romantic comedy, even if it is painfully true to a certain awkward depiction of life more often that not.

So, will you be binge-ing the first season of Love beginning tomorrow? Take a look at my review above and tell us what you think.
