‘Midnight Special’ Trailer: Michael Shannon Tries To Protect His Gifted Son From Zealots, Feds & Everyone Else – Berlin

“You have no clue what you’re dealing with, do you?” In Midnight Special, a father goes on the run to protect his son. But this is no action flick with double-crossed crime lords and such. Michael Shannon stars as a dad trying to uncover the mystery about the special powers instilled in his 8-year-old (Jaeden Lieberher). Want the father-son relationship defined in a couple of lines? Boy: “You don’t have to worry about me.” Dad: “I’ll always worry about you, Alton. I like worrying about you. That’s the deal.”

Midnight Special 2The logline for the pic, which is in Competition at Berlin: What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the federal government. Ultimately, his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever.

Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver and Sam Shepard co-star in writer-director Jeff Nichols’ first film since 2012’s Mud. Shannon drew some awards buzz after the pic’s screening Friday at Berlinale Palast.
