‘The Oath’: Baltasar Kormakur To Star In Thriller He’s Also Directing & Producing – Berlin

EXCLUSIVE: Everest director Baltasar Kormakur is stepping in front of the camera for the first time in eight years to take The Oath. The multi-hyphenate returns to acting with the psychological thriller he co-scripted with Olafur Egilsson and is also helming and producing. He’ll play a father who sets off on a mission to try to pull his daughter away from the world of drugs and petty crime, only to discover that danger can be found in unexpected places. He’s currently shooting the Icelandic-language drama.

Kormákur, who continues to segue between Hollywood and his home country of Iceland, originally trained as an actor and last appeared onscreen in his own Reykjavik-Rotterdam in 2008. He then shot Contraband in 2012, based on Reykjavik-Rotterdam and with Mark Wahlberg stepping into the role he originated.

His RVK Studios banner is producing The Oath in partnership with Film4 and Germany’s ZDFE. Film4’s David Kosse is exec producer. World sales are handled by XYZ Films which is talking to buyers at the Berlin’s EFM this week.

TrappedKeeping busy, Kormakur and RVK recently produced crime series Trapped, which debuted in Iceland as the strongest premiere in local TV history. It also launched this month in France, attracting 5M viewers, and will soon air in the UK on BBC Four, the Nordic territories and Germany. The U.S. rights were previously acquired by The Weinstein Company.

The director is coming off of a personal best worldwide box office of more than $200M with Everest. His feature projects in development include Vikingr, also co-scripted with Egilsson, and produced by Everest‘s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner; and oil-spill sci-fi drama Cascade. He’s also producing his first comedy series for televison The Mayor, a day-in-the-life satire based on Jon Gnarr, the real-life comedian-turned-mayor of Reykjavik.
