Disney Theatricals Sets Broadway Timeline For Fresh ‘Frozen’ Musical In 2018

Disney Theatrical Productions chief Thomas Schumacher made it official today: Frozen, the musical based on the Mouse’s blockbuster, Oscar-winning animated film from 2013, will come to Broadway in the spring of 2018 at a theater to be announced. Presumably, it will join Aladdin, at Disney’s Broadway flagship, the New Amsterdam Theatre, and The Lion King, which is at the Nederlander Organization’s Minskoff Theatre; both shows are long runs and among the highest-grossing musicals in the business. Also to be announced is where Frozen will try out in the summer of 2017 before landing in Times Square.

The new news comes the same day ABC announced a new Frozen holiday special will air during the 2017 holiday season. Original voices Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel and Josh Gad will return, with Kevin Deters and Stevie Wermers-Skelton (Prep & Landing) directing.

Disney had announced some plans for the Broadway show earlier. Frozen will feature music and lyrics by the creators of the film score, Kristen Anderson‑Lopez (In Transit, Up Here) and Robert Lopez (Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon, Up Here) with a book by Jennifer Lee (Wreck‑It Ralph), the film’s screenwriter and director (with Chris Buck). Frozen won 2014 Oscars for Best Song (“Let It Go”) and Best Animated Feature.

Two‑time Tony nominee Alex Timbers (Amazon’s Mozart In The Jungle and the upcoming Broadway revival of The Robber Bridegroom) will direct and Tony‑winner Peter Darling (Matilda) will choreograph. The design team includes sets and costumes by seven‑time Tony winner Bob Crowley (An American In Paris), lighting by five‑time Tony winner Natasha Katz (Aladdin, An American in Paris) and sound design by four‑time Tony nominee Peter Hylenski (The Scottsboro Boys, Motown: The Musical). Two‑time Tony winner Stephen Oremus (Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon) is music supervisor and will create the vocal and incidental arrangements.
