EXCLUSIVE: Screen Media Films has acquired U.S. rights to Rio, I Love You, the third in the Cities of Love franchise that includes 2006’s Paris, je t’aime and 2008’s New York, I Love You. The indie distributor has set an April 15 release date in New York, followed by L.A. and additional markets in a platform release throughout April and May.
Like its predecessors, Rio, I Love You recruited several directors to contribute vignettes about love stories set in the title city. The new film comprises 10 stories from filmmakers Jose Padilha, Paolo Sorrentino, Fernando Meirelles, Stephan Elliott, John Turturro, Andrucha Waddington, Guillermo Arriaga, Sang-soo Im, Carlos Saldanha, Nadine Labaki and Vicente Amorim. Set in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro — which will be in the world spotlight in August as it hosts the Summer Olympics — the pic will star Turturro, Fernanda Montenegro, Emily Mortimer, Basil Hoffman, Vincent Cassel, Ryan Kwanten, Jason Isaacs, Roberta Rodrigues, Rodrigo Santoro, Wagner Moura, Vanessa Paradis, Claudia Abreu and Harvey Keitel.
“We are pleased to be working with the team at Screen Media to bring Rio, I Love You to the U.S. market,” said producer Joshua Skurla. “The film offers the audience an opportunity to embrace Rio de Janeiro through the lens of some of the greatest filmmakers from around the world.” Added Screen Media SVP Tom Yagielski: “Being fans of the Cities of Love series, we at Screen Media couldn’t be more excited to bring this beautiful film to American audiences, just in time for Rio’s big summer.”
Rio, I Love You is a Conspiração Filmes, Empyrean Pictures and Bossa Nova Films production, in association with Ever So Close Inc. and Americas Film Conservancy. The deal was negotiated by Seth Needle, SVP Worldwide Acquisitions at Screen Media Films, and WestEnd Films on behalf of the filmmakers.
