Daniel Radcliffe’s Rotting, Farting Corpse Claimed By A24: Deal For Sundance Polarizing Puzzler ‘Swiss Army Man’

A24 has acquired North American rights to Swiss Army Man, the pic starring Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe (as a corpse) that directors Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert described as a “fart drama” during its premiere at Sundance last week. The film was the most polarizing of the festival, which says a lot considering that Sundance usually has their fair share of them. There were plenty of walkouts during the premiere screening, enough that Deadline and others wrote stories about it. But distributors were vexed; they said they admired the quirkiness of the film even as they questioned if it could ever play as a commercial film like a Weekend At Bernies. While most were scared away by a movie that could be the 21st Century’s answer to Plan Nine From Outer Space, all of them saw a lot of potential in these wacky filmmakers. A24, which got seven Oscar noms for Room and the docu Amy, was willing to take the chance on releasing this polarizing puzzler. A summer theatrical release is contemplated.
